“…it certainly wasn’t the kind of kiss you see in movies these days, but it was wonderful in its own way, and all I can remember about the moment is that when our lips first touched, I knew the memory would last forever. “

Nicholas Sparks, A Walk to Remember, p 171

This book has a lot of firsts for me. I remember reading it for the first time back in 2003 and that it’s the first book I’ve ever read that has really made me have a deep down cry over it. It is also the first and only book that I’ve been able to really sink into for a book that is written in the first person. Another first…it’s the first book I’ve read by Nicholas Sparks, making me want to read every other book that he has written, good or bad (I’ve yet to read any others at this time, but I do own a few of them though). A Walk to Remember is one of my absolute favorite books, one that I recommend to anyone who has someone who means a great deal to them.

Most would think that this book, with it being a love story, is seen from Jamie’s point of view, however, it’s actually Landon that is the narrator of the story. You don’t often see things from a guy’s point of view, at least with love stories. People like to think those types of feelings can only come from a woman (especially those manly men hahaha), however, this book makes you not only see how Jamie is feeling with her growing love for Landon alongside having to come to cope with her outcome of having Leukemia, but how Landon comes to fall in love with her. Especially with him telling her from the beginning that he wouldn’t think of ever doing so. Not with a person like Jamie, the girl that everyone at school finds to be the weird girl whose father is the head of the Baptist church. The feelings are not much different from what a girl feels for a boy, but it does make you think, wow, I didn’t realize a guy can feel for someone in such a deep way. I mean, I’ve met plenty of guys that have had deep feelings for their significant other, but this book really allows you to feel as they would feel all the while tearing at your heart for what the two of them go through.

I can’t remember ever reading a book that has made me feel so much while reading it.

About A Walk to Remember

It was 1958 and Landon Carter’s last year at Beaufort High, a time that he would never forget for the rest of his life. He caused his fair share of trouble alongside his so-called friends, dated a few girls, and pretty much did as he pleased. His father wasn’t around much at the time as he lives in Washington, D.C. while Landon and his mother stayed in Beaufort, North Carolina. With his father being in Congress he is pressured to go for class president, and surprisingly, he wins thanks to the help of his best friend, Eric Hunter. However, with him being class president he was required to attend the school homecoming dance with a date, but there was no one agreeing to go with him! Searching through his yearbook, he comes across that of Jamie Sullivan, the girl everyone sees as the weird one of Beaufort High, who was also the daughter of the church minister, Hegbert Sullivan. After attending the school dance together Jamie then goes on to ask Landon to participate in the production of the play, The Christmas Angel. And from that moment his life will never be the same again.

Jamie Sullivan is the girl that no-one pays attention to other than to make fun of her ugly sweaters and how she carries a Bible everywhere she goes. She is quite content to live her life by herself with only having to worry about taking care of her widowed father and helping out the local orphanage. Then fate takes a turn and Landon is asking her out to the homecoming dance. So, in turn, she asks him to partner her in the Christmas play. Jamie soon starts to show Landon how deep one can feel for another person all the while keeping a deep secret that will change their relationship forever. Because of this secret she keeps from him, she makes Landon promise that he would never fall in love with her. Even though he said in the beginning that him falling for her would never happen, that soon changes the more they spend time together.

Their lives soon change in a way neither of them ever expected.

Book vs. Movie - A Walk to Remember

Fri Jul 5 , 2019
I loved the movie for A Walk to Remember, it was hard not to, but I would still recommend to anyone who likes (or loves) the movie to also give the book a chance as well. There are so many differences between the book and the movie, and I really wish they would have stuck more to the book of course, but the movie did turn out to be a good one that I've watched at least a handful few times. I've gone over a few of those contrasts here.
